Now, it's time! Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) published its annual 2020 World University Rankings. QS used six basic measures to determine the overall quality of a university.
The metrics are as follows:
- Academic Reputation (40%)
- Employer Reputation (10%)
- Faculty / Student Ratio (20%)
- Staff quotations (20%)
- Foreign Faculty / International Student Ratio (5% each)
Overall, 26 universities in Canada landed in the 2020 World University Rankings, which includes 1,001 colleges from around the world. While a complete list of the 26 universities can be found here, the 10 universities below are actually considered the best in Canada.
- University of Toronto
Global Ranking: 29
Insulin and stem cell research's home, the University of Toronto is again nabbling the #1 slot. Attached to the world's 29th place alongside Australian National University, U of T has the highest scores of educational and employer prestige for Canadian universities. The University of Toronto has over 74,000 students enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs, making it Canada's largest university!
- McGill University
Global Ranking: 35
In this year's ratings, McGill University in Quebec tied for the 35th strongest university in the world with the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). The high ranking of McGill is partly based on its international educational standing, as it accounts for nearly 25 percent of the total student population of the university.
- University of British Columbia
Global Ranking: 51

The University of British Columbia is also among the top 100 universities in the world according to the rankings of QS, the highest ranked institution on the west coast of Canada. QS gives particular attention to UBC's Geography, Mineral and Mining Engineering programs and activities relevant to athletics. Nevertheless, the prestige of the company and the overall academic reputation still help bring UBC to the top 3 in Canada.

Global Ranking: 113
Located in the city of Edmonton, the University of Alberta is one of Canada's top-ranked universities thanks in large part to its research focus and a wide array of undergraduate and graduate programs. With more than 7,800 international students attending, QS ranks the university high in academic reputation and international education.
- Université de Montréal
Global Ranking: 137
In this year's ratings, the French-speaking Université de Montréal has jumped a little–it's one place among Canadian universities and 12 world ranking spots(137th). In the area of life sciences and medicine, the college places among the world's top 100 universities, and its pharmacy and pharmacology colleges rank 48th in the world.
- McMaster University
Global Rank: 140
Hamilton, Ontario's McMaster University has gained six world ranking places (140th) and is perceived to be Canada's sixth best university by 2020. McMaster is known for his prestigious school of medicine. It is also one of the top three research-intensive universities in Canada, however, and is the only Canadian host of a University of the United Nations–the Institute for Water, Environment and Health.
- University of Waterloo
Global Rank: 173
Unlike Western, for the quotes per faculty member metric, the University of Waterloo is ranked in the top 100 worldwide. UW has been recognised over the last 25 years as one of Canada's most creative colleges and has one of the world's largest collaborative education programs.
- Western University
Global Rank: 211
Toronto, the Western University of Ontario climbed from three spots to the world's 211st. One of the reasons for this is that Western earns the highest score of citations per faculty member metric (77th) among Canadian universities. Western also has three programs–Nursing, Philosophy, and Psychology–that rank among the Top 50 programs in the world.
- University of Calgary
Global Rank: 233
The University of Calgary, with 77 Canada Research Chairs and 85 research facilities, is one of the top five research universities in Canada. For its enterprising campus climate and international academics, Calgary, Alberta's largest public university, always ranks high.
- Queen’s University
Global Rank: 239
Queen's University, located in beautiful Kingston, Ontario, was the 10th best university in Canada and the 239th best university in the world.
